Sharjah

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven Emirates in the Arabian Peninsula and one of its Emirate Sharjah is the third largest Emirate in the UAE, as well as, the acclaimed cultural capital of the region.

Nearly thirty years ago, when Dubai was still not much more than a somewhat trading port, Sharjah was at the forefront of tourism development. If Dubai is a hub of the largest, tallest and biggest man-made wonders and a shop-till-you-drop destination, Sharjah believes in a more subtle approach by focusing on heritage, culture, history, art and adventure. The culture capital may not be as glitzy and lively as Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or have a huge number of malls or attractions, but Sharjah has its own worldly charm that is unmatchable! In fact, with plenty of souks, museums and art hubs, Sharjah has been named as the “Cultural Capital ” of the Arab World by UNESCO, firmly labeling the Emirate as the keystone for Islamic and Arabic culture.

Sharjah is thriving with places that quench the thirst of many art lovers. Whatever type or style of art you prefer, there is certainly something that can interest you in this Emirate. Therefore, with Sharjah accommodating people with all kinds of tastes and preferences, no wonder it is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination in the UAE.

Sharjah city is definitely worth a visit. Highlights of Sharjah Include the Al Noor Mosque, Al Qasba, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Al Mamzar Beach Street, SharjahAquarium, Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park, Al Noor Island, Al Mamzar Beach Park and Al Majaz Waterfront among others. Located at the Khalid lagoon at the Buhaira Corniche, Al Noor Mosque is undeniably one of the top places to visit in Sharjah and is the only mosque open to non-Muslims. Moreover, the Sharjah Art Museum is the best museum to visit and the largest art gallery in the Gulf, with a remarkable collection of Arabic and Orientalist art. On your Sharjah holiday, you must also pay a visit to the One Old House, an impressive Fort that gives an interesting insight into how affluent Arabs lived before the arrival of the high-rise apartment.

Interestingly, the Sharjah International airport is situated just 15 km away from the centre of Dubai and approximately 18 km east south east of the Sharjah city. The most popular airlines that fly to Sharjah are Air Arabia (direct), Air India Express (direct), Indigo and Turkish Airlines among others.
